Someone linked this post to me today and it is absolutely awesome!

Silver Hydra appears to be a fitness blog written by someone who really knows their nutritional science. This article was just fantastic!

http://www.silverhydra.com/2011/04/supplements-already-in-your-kitchen/

He talks about ways that you can save money on vitamins and supplements. I think it’s just great. Some of the top points to take away:

Kellogs Corn Flakes = are pretty close to pure Glucose. So instead of buying a glucose supplement at GNC nutrition, why not grind up a handful of cornflakes in a Magic Bullet?

Granola or Oats can be powdered to become your very own ‘slow carb formula’

Egg Shells! ‘Blanch’ the shells (remove the salmonella risk), use a blender, and you’ve got yourself some highly bio-available calcium. I think this one’s really neat! (though still might prefer to buy my calcium supplements, just saying)

Cook tomato sauces in a cast-iron pot and you’ve got yourself an Iron Supplement.

Silver Hydra says to save your vegetable water for shakes and stuff (to get the chlorophyll and other vegetable nutrients) I’d probably prefer to boil the water down until it’s about 10% of the original volume. That way all the flavour concentrates and you’ve got a lovely vegetable stock for soups and stews! (Yum) That’s not really cost saving because the energy used to heat your stove isn’t free – but hey. Soup!

Finally he says that your orange peels can be washed and shredded in the blender to give you an excellent dose of pure fibre. Note that the key to fat reduction and loss in the Dr Lustig talks centered around increasing your fibre intake (so maybe those colon cleansing products aren’t such a scam after all)

Anyways, a huge thanks to SilverHydra for his amazing and fun article on at-home supplement production.

I’m putting these up here with the intention of filling out a bit more of the information around it later. In the meantime, please feel free to check out these talks.

A New York Times Article About It

NPR discusses the same.

Also take note of this *other* source that very simply explains the effect that Carbohydrates have on the body in general. What’s most interesting to me is how this information merges with the information from Dr. Lustig above. If Lustig is saying that the body can process *most* of our Glucose sugars (within limits) and the information below is explaining simply how carbs effect the growth of fat… then it should stand to reason that to a reasonable extent, we’re allowed to eat the Glucose carbs that we get from bread – but not the refined sugar carbs that we get from Soda and stuff like that (this includes honey, agave, table sugar, and everything with the ever popular High Fructose Corn Syrup).

All that said and done, this seems to mesh pretty closely with what Tom Venuto explained in his book .

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle

Honestly, I’ve known that his book was right on the money for ages now, so it’s nice to see some actual giant-brained doctor’s research.

The Truth About Abs – by Mike Geary

*Exactly* what the book would look like if you actually printed it, with a high gloss cardstock cover. In reality it will look like the Ipad or Kindle you read it on.

As it turns out, there is a tremendous myth out there about “Weight Loss” if you watch a show like The Biggest Loser, you’re going to hear Bob Michaels and Jillian McKeith (or either of the two new trainers) hammering on about who has had the maximum percentage weekly weight loss.

If you read “The Truth About Abs, (or even just watch the free presentation) you’ll find out that it isn’t actually “Weight Loss” that is really important… it’s FAT LOSS that we’re all *really* interested in.

What you technically might worried about (looking like a massive hulking wall of muscle) is actually one of the secret keys that is blocking you from reaching your weight loss goals. One of the first things we learn when reading Mike Geary’s Truth About Abs is that adding muscle isn’t the same as “gaining weight”. Even though you might be weigh more (because of the added muscle) you’ll actually wind up reducing your overall body fat.

But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself… time to properly review The Truth About Abs

The Book Itself

At only 120 pages, Mike Geary’s “Truth About Abs” is the shortest of the diet eBooks I’ve reviewed so far. One of the truths about dieting though is that the things you really need to know can fit on just a few pages. Everything else is just supporting material and background information.

The key advantage of such a short book is that with Mike’s work, you will be able to get started right away. Mike’s work focuses in on what you need to know. Long winded rules and difficult, complex eating strategies aren’t going get in the way and confuse you.

The Simplicity of it All

This book has value because of the overwhelming ‘simple truth’ of it all. Mike Geary who carries multiple personal training certifications has a level of understanding of the processes of weight loss that allows him to explain it in clear and simple terms. He gets right to the point and in clear, understandable English, he teaches you what you’ve got to know about getting the Six Pack Abs of your dreams…

A Tale in Two Parts

The truth about abs is broken into two sections… see if you can stay with me here…

Diet

Exercise

It honestly boggles my mind why anyone would fall for a program that tries to offer any more than that. There’s no crazy “colon cleansing” that you’e got to do. No radical magic pill that’s going to answer all of your trouble (read: SCAM). Mike’s book is going to work you through the same honest to goodness program that he’s lead hundreds of other personal training clients though. (Fun fact: did you know that over 275,000 others have already bought this book? How has it done so well? It works!)
